A Letter to the Youth Group Leaders

Dear youth group leader,

There are many wonderful qualities about you.

First, your volition to spend time around teenagers. Teenagers are a difficult group to minister to. Some adults think teenagers are self-absorbed and unwilling to learn. You see something different. You see that teenagers are part of the church too, and you seek to guide them.

It is incredible the way you make yourself available to us. You are approachable and friendly, and a good listener when we need to share something heavy. I remember at youth group how you would go around the room and ask everyone how they were doing. You would take prayer requests during small groups, even writing them down to remember.

Today, we want to commend you for your faithfulness. When our youth groups were canceled, you could have taken a long break from us and left us to do who-knows-what, but you didn’t. We appreciate that you kept teaching us, kept meeting with us, and kept caring about us. You came to us through video call to keep ministering to us.

We know the video format probably isn’t ideal. It’s challenging to have real conversations online. We can’t play our absurd youth group games like wrestle the buttered watermelon or four-way soccer when we’re online. We can’t hold hands in a circle while praying. We can’t sing together. The teaching time is less interactive, though I’m willing to bet the “mute all participants” button comes in handy when we get a bit rowdy!

We all miss these things. That’s why we not only appreciate your faithfulness, we admire your adaption. “Going” to youth group gives me a sense of normalcy and community while still at home. We are grateful for your commitment and love for us teenagers.

Thank you so much.

Sincerely yours,

Church Kids

Thank YOU for your thank you note 🙂 We appreciate it. We totally love continuing on with youth group with you and the group…but you’re right…it isn’t the same as in-person, real connection. Jesus gives us the strength (and creativity, for some) to continue on even when it isn’t the same. He works through you guys, through the leaders, and through the new outlets for serving Him. I am just thankful we are living through a pandemic in the time of internet and advanced communications 🙂 That way we don’t have to go “dark” in this time of not meeting together. Sending a big air, virtual hug to you, Emily!

It’s really cool that this thank you letter follows your post about the importance of Christian community.

Thank you youth leaders for all that you do to create a safe place for teenagers to build and experience authentic community!
