A Hub for Recommendations

I predict that once I’m home from camp, I will need book recommendations, and perhaps some new music as well. So, here is the spot where I can recommend things to you, and in turn, you may recommends things to me!

This post shall be updated as I come across more awesome things.

Books

The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster

The Phantom Tollbooth is a children’s fantasy about a boy named Milo who believes life is dull until he is whisked off to a magical land.

The Mark of the Dragonfly by Jaleigh Johnson

The Mark of the Dragonfly is a middle grade steampunk fantasy about a girl named Piper who discovers a mysterious girl in the wreckage of a caravan who might be about to solve all of Piper’s money troubles.

The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt

The Wednesday Wars is a coming of age historical fiction about a boy named Holling who, among his other troubles, believes that his seventh grade teacher hates him.

Music

for KING & COUNTRY

for KING & COUNTRY is a CCM band featuring American-Australian brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone.

Songs to start with:

  • “Fix My Eyes”
  • “Shoulders”
  • “Priceless”

The Gray Havens

The Gray Havens is a folk pop duo featuring Dave and Licia Radford.

Some of the best:

  • “Ghost of a King”
  • “This My Soul”
  • “Three Birds in Babylon”

They Might Be Giants

To put it mildly, They Might Be Giants is a chaotic band. I shall describe their genre as “nonsensical road trip music.”

Road trip favorites:

  • “Birdhouse in Your Soul”
  • “We Want a Rock”
  • “Number Three”

Your turn!

You get to recommend things to me now! I noted some things below that I generally like, but feel free to throw books or music at me with wild abandon (metaphorically speaking, of course).

Books:

  • I typically prefer stand-alone novels, unless the series is very special
  • If nothing else, the book needs a good character arc
  • I need to read more fantasy
  • I do not like romance

Music:

  • Bands with good harmonies (including acapella)
  • Neat rhyme patterns
  • Clever or silly songs
